Footballer’s dressing room chat led him to faith in Jesus Christ

‘I didn’t have the strength alone to come out and declare I was a Christian’

Former Derby and Birmingham defender Michael Johnson says chats with a teammate led him to faith in Jesus Christ.

Johnson, 42, enjoyed an 18-year career in professional football before becoming a coach for Cardiff.

The centre-half made 262 appearances for Birmingham in a seven-year stint at the club before moving to Derby, where he met colleague Darren Moore, who would help him express faith.

He said: “I didn’t have the strength alone to come out and declare I was a Christian and speak about my faith.

“I managed to room with a player called Darren Moore and we had many conversations about faith.

“He was a born-again Christian and over a period of time I felt like I was becoming more comfortable with the idea, so I decided that now is the time for me to conduct my life in a way that reflects Christ.”

Johnson said that as a young man he had been “wrapped up in money, the fame, women, gambling and nightclubbing” before he connected with God.
