God’s ways are higher than ours
“The wages of sin is death, but after tax it’s just a sort of tired feeling,” a sharp-tongued commentator once observed. This issue gives the lie to exactly this kind of thinking.
The gospel is a life and death message – just look at 1 Corinthians 1:18: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
Alternatively, you could gather the same message from a quick flick through the pages of this month’s iBelieve. From Faith Child’s aborted abortion to Tanya Chand’s unsuccessful overdose, this issue is filled with stories that look death full in the face and somehow find God’s gracious life. In his Corinthian correspondence,Paul goes on to tell that church that God’s order is totally different to the world’s:the wisdom of the wise is confounded by God’s ‘foolishness’ – the offensive message of a dead Jew, hanging on the cross to save the world.
Manoj Raithatha knows more about that than many of us – after all, how close have you come to making the Sunday Times Rich List? Manoj was pursuing life when he suddenly found out what life was like in the valley of the shadow of death: his son’s illness and the collapse of his business. His story of restoration is a reminder that God’s ways are higher than ours and his values are different from society’s. That’s something NT Wright, the ex-Bishop of Durham and academic extraordinaire, has spent his life making plain. Touched by the love of God at an early age, he was never the same.
I really hope this issue inspires you. AtniBelieve we’re all about faith – and you’ll find it here in abundance. Read the stories, spread the word.
