Jesus is the rock I’ve built my life on!
Film star David Oyelowo may have been raised in a Christian home – but he had to find faith for himself
British movie actor David Oyelowo has explained how Jesus is the rock on which he builds his life. Hollywood star Oyelowo, 40, is best known for his role in the 2014 blockbuster Selma, but the British Nigerian actor finds there is some-
thing much more rewarding than acting – a relationship with God. He says: “I pray about what I should and shouldn’t do in movies, and of course who you are dictates what you are drawn to, and so I am sure that the roles I play, the films I do, are a reflection of what I believe. “They would have to be. There is no doubt that there is a correlation between my faith as a person and the roles I play.”
Oyelowo’s upbringing was in the Baptist Church and faith remains a crucial part of his life today. He says: “I was raised Baptist but at the age of 16 I realised I was basically piggy- backing on my parents’ faith – it wasn’t yet real for me. “So at that stage I reached out to God and said if you don’t turn out for me personally within three months, I’m out. And he did. And that was the point at which I became a born-again Christian and have been ever since. That’s the rock on which I build my life.
