Steve Thompson’s faith took a temporary knock when he thought his wife was about to die last year. But God stepped in and performed a miracle. The Thompsons spoke to Direction about their journey

When Velveta Thompson was rushed into hospital with severe back pain and nausea, doctors initially
thought it was a stroke.

But much to her and husband Steve’s horror, medics gave the diagnosis of pneumonia, meningitis and a brain haemorrhage.

Steve had to dig deep into his faith and do what he knew best as a worship leader: “When I initially got the news, my faith got knocked,” he says. “But that is the essence of intercessory worship, where you no longer pray from your mind, but from your spirit. Standing over my wife with my guitar and playing, I rediscovered a better understanding of David and Goliath and how it was to face the giants in our lives. When your faith is strong, the giant becomes smaller.”

Growing up in Christian families, both Steve and Velveta’s fathers were Pentecostal ministers in the Midlands. They became good friends as they served together in the ministry.
