Bethany Hamilton found strength in God after losing her arm. Her story is now told in a movie which she hopes will leave viewers uplifted.
International surfing champion Bethany Hamilton’s latest documentary film focuses heavily on promoting her Christian beliefs.
Hamilton, the 2004 ESPY Award-winner, suffered a devastating shark attack which cost her arm, but through everything she has found strength in God.
She said: “Surfing is my passion and my joy and my God-given talent, and I’d go as far as to say it’s my vocation. I’ve always been driven to perform well because I want longevity in my sport. I’ve been so blessed to be able to have a career doing something I love so much.”
Woven throughout the film ‘Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable’ is Hamilton’s commitment to her faith. She added: “Submitting to Christ means every day recognising God’s faithfulness is true and good and pure.
“It’s not necessarily my faithfulness; I put the emphasis on God being the one who is faithful. He’s consistent and right and good and loving and forgiving on a daily basis.
“It’s recognising that God is the ultimate giver and forgiver, and it’s through Christ that we are able to overcome everything that we go through. Putting the glory in his name and not in our own. I hope this film is positive, encouraging, and uplifting for viewers.
“I want everyone to realise that with God, it’s possible to overcome even the greatest challenges.”
Film critic left open-mouthed
The movie, ‘Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable’, has won much critical acclaim. LA Times reviewer Kimber Myers, says: “‘Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable’ doesn’t offer the technical details about the sport that might have made its subject’s feats even more inspiring, but even someone who knows nothing about surfing can’t help but sit mouth agape at Hamilton’s athleticism, optimism and determination.”
