The most popular verse of 2020 has a message of hope for 2021, a Bible teacher has said.

Isaiah 41:10 – which encourages readers not to fear but to take comfort in the presence of God – was the most searched for, read and bookmarked verse last year, according to Bible app YouVersion.

The verse reads: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

The verse’s popularity shows that during the Covid-19 pandemic people were afraid and in need of reassurance, said Charles Price, former Principal of Capenwray Bible School.

“It is no surprise that Isaiah 41:10 has been a passage to which millions have turned,” he wrote in an article called Fear and Faith. “God promises to be with us in tough times and give us strength.

“Therein lies our security. Not in God taking us out of our situation, but in our acknowledging God as being in it.”

“Sunlit or dark, blue skies or dark clouds… his answer always has an ‘I am’ in it, as has the most searched verse in 2020: ‘I am with you… I am your God’.
